Day 081

Daniel’s determination arrives on Sunday, and for once, the reference code doesn’t tell her the outcome before she opens it.

Secondary Determination: Appeal upheld in part. Residency status extended pending full corridor review. Relocation assistance available but not mandatory at this time.

She reads it twice to be sure. It isn’t a full win — the corridor review still hangs over everything, a suspended sentence rather than an acquittal — but it is, unmistakably, the first result all spring that doesn’t end in the same flat administrative no. Daniel and Priya get to stay. For now. For a “now” with no fixed edge to it, which is its own kind of mercy in a system that rarely offers even that much.

She calls Daniel from the library terminal, which she doesn’t usually do, because some news doesn’t belong in a written line.

His voice, when he picks up, already knows something’s different before she’s said anything — she can hear Priya in the background, asking who it is.

“You got it,” she says. “Not the whole thing. Enough. You can stay, for now.”

There’s a silence on the line that goes on long enough that she wonders if the connection dropped, and then she hears him, unsteady, saying something to Priya that isn’t quite words, and then his voice again, closer to the receiver.

“Because of him,” Daniel says. “Because of what he taught me to write.”

“Because of what you brought to write with,” she says. “He’d say the same thing back to you.”

She goes to Sector 9 straight after, wanting to be the one to tell Elias in person, and finds him already smiling before she reaches the gate — Daniel got there first, apparently, unable to wait either.

“One,” Elias says, when she’s close enough. “Out of two we know of. That’s not a good ratio, if I’m honest with you.”

“I know.”

“But it’s not nothing.” He looks at her, something almost lighter in his face than she’s seen since Thursday. “I’ll take not nothing. I’ve built a whole life, apparently, on learning to take not nothing.

She laughs, surprising herself, and for a moment — brief, undeserved, entirely welcome — the weight of the week lifts just enough to let something like joy through.
